The friends you make......
Jan 2020 during the bushfires, many people in and around Moruya were told to evacuate. The Moruya Bowling Club became a refuge for locals and tourists all wanting a safe haven during the fires. The club had over 30 people, including pets sleeping inside and others camping in the surrounds. The power was off and in the spirit of helping others, a club member provided a generator and we endeavored to feed and look after our visitors and provide as much comfort as possible for our distressed companions.
Amongst those seeking refuge from the fires was an Australian Indian family, who had no money, petrol, or food. After speaking to Ethen (the father), I offered to give him $200 cash and he could reimburse me when he returned to Sydney. Ethen and his family stayed the night with the other families and after we served breakfast the next morning those that were allowed to travel, headed for home. Before he left, Ethen could not thank the club and staff enough for the help and friendship shown to him and his family. After a 19 hour trip they eventually made it home.
Fast forward two years, as I was walking my dog at Lavender bay Tuross heads on New Year's day, my mobile rang and the voice said "Grant, this is Ethen." I replied "fires Ethen?" and he said "yes". He had called to thank me and the staff for looking after his family over two years ago and said he would never forget the kindness and help he received.
